IN MEMORIAM
Someone asked me why did I, an enamelist, become a calligrapher. I really don’t know the answer. It is a big surprise to me how my life developed.
One day I happened onto a Chinese brush painting demonstration, I was fascinated.
That fascination became the guiding principle of my life. I painted bamboo, orchids, plum blossom and pine trees for years until my teacher told me my painting could be enhanced if I study calligraphy
I did not like calligraphy but when I went to China and studied at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, something happened in my heart, I don’t know what, but now I love to do calligraphy.
I am an award winning calligrapher and bring to it a deep appreciation. The brush, the ink, the paper and I have become one spirit. I have fulfilled my destiny.”
BIOGRAPHY
Rose Sigal Ibsen was born in Romania, migrated to Israel after World War II and then found a permanent home in the U.S. in 1957. Following a successful career as an enamelist, she became a jewelry designer and subsequently began studying Chinese and Japanese brush painting and calligraphy. She has won accolades as a distinguished American Sumi-Brush artist and has had 15 solo exhibitions as well as numerous group shows nationally and internationally.
